Samsung was once considered the undisputed king of semiconductor memory chips. However, over the past couple of years, its technological leadership has faded, and its primary rivals Micron and SK Hynix have surpassed Samsung. Now, even Chinese firms, which were considered technologically poorer, are fast approaching Samsung.
To shake off the competition from those firms, Samsung seems to be preparing to launch LPDDR6 memory chips later this year.
According to a report from Business Post Korea, Samsung will likely develop LPDDR6 memory chips using 1c DRAM. DRAM is a core part of memory chips, and there have been six generations of DRAM: 1x, 1y, 1z, 1a, 1b, and 1c. 1c RAM is the latest design and offers faster performance and better power efficiency compared to 1b DRAM chips.
Samsung's LPDDR6 memory chips could be launched before the end of this year. They could be used in laptops and smartphones that will be launched early next year. It could be paired with the Snapdragon X Elite 2 chip that is expected to be announced in September 2025.
China's CXMT is planning to phase out the production of LPDD4 chips this year and fully transition to LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X memory chips. It is also currently develping LPDDR6 memory chips for the future.
Some reports claim that CXMT's progress has been greatly exaggerated. Even its LPDDR5 and LPDDR5x DRAM chips are reportedly facing some issues related to heat and effciency. And after tougher sanctions from Trump's administration, further improvement to CXMT's LPDDR5 and LPDDR5x DRAM chips will be almost impossible.
